Academic programs contract CapSource to recruit Host Companies that are interested in collaborating with their students. This is an outsourced solution for developing or enhancing project-based learning programs. Fees are covered by the institutions and are based on the unique requirements designed by the school.
Frequency Asked Questions
Who pays for the engagement?
Who scopes out the projects? (How do we insure quality and results)
CapSource uses a growing network of industry-specific Project Scoping Experts with a variety of different backgrounds, including instructional design, management consulting, and project management. We also leverage the university faculty that expect to manage the engagement for project scoping in order to confirm that it meets the learning objectives for the course.
How are the projects managed?
Each Host Company assigns a Project Champion and Project Supervisor to the engagement that’s responsible for interfacing with the students on a bi-weekly basis.
How much time is required?
On average, our companies allocate between 30-40 hours to the engagement throughout the semester. Project teams are paired with university faculty that mentor the students as well as they go through the project.
What types of companies do we work with?
We anticipate programs will want a breadth of companies that vary in size, industry, and culture so that students can select the work environment they’re most interested in testing. We work with companies that are pre-launch through Fortune 500 in every cohort.
What types of projects do we design?
Projects can truly be based on any academic discipline. For example, our projects include components that revolve around sales, marketing, supply chain management, product development, information technology, software development, data analysis, market research, financial analysis, public relations/communications, and more.
What types of students are included on projects?
We recommend that students are at least in their junior year of an undergraduate program before assigning them to a real client. We typically reserve these engagements for graduate students or undergraduate seniors that have shown professionalism and a deep understanding of their subject matter.
How complex are the projects and how long do they last?
We specialize in developing project prompts that meet student competency levels and learning goals. We typically run projects for roughly 13-weeks, which spans almost an entire semester (less the first and last weeks).
How much interaction is there between the students and company?
We require that the companies meet with the students at least every other week for the duration of the project. We typically aim to include at least one upper level manager per project. We allow the students and the companies to meet in a cadence that makes the most sense based on the intended project outcomes.
What about NDAs and other legal paperwork?
We make this easier than ever before! We include standard NDAs for faculty, students, and companies that are involved with our projects. We also include a set of customizable Rules of Engagement that functions as a contract between the students and the company leadership.
How are the students graded?
We require that academic programs assign Faculty Mentors to projects to help ensure that the projects go smoothly. This resource monitors student performance and acts as a coach throughout the consulting process. Students should be graded by the faculty mentor including help and feedback from the Host Company.
Who maintains intellectual property ownership?
Since the students are working on a project at your company, you own all the intellectual property that they develop outright.
